Characteristics of design

The tapered roller bearings present on the inner and outer rings of tapered roller between which are willing tapered roller. If the conical surfaces were extended, they converge towards a single point on the axis of rotation. Their design makes them particularly suited to the combined loads (radial and axial). However, they can not operate at speeds as high as the cylindrical roller bearings with cage. The SKF roller bearings cylindrical joined two rows are available in standard version under four different types: three types of bearings and open with a type joints. All these bearings are made of and inseparable elements with an outer ring and ring groove with three holes to facilitate lubricating grease.
Roller-type NNCL have an inner ring with three shoulders and a fixed outer ring without shoulder. A segment of judgement, inserted in the outer ring between the rows of rollers, maintains the various components of working capital assembled. An axial displacement of the tree in relation to the bearing is possible in both directions. These bearings can be used as landing free.
Roller-type NNCF are equipped with three shoulders fixed on the inner ring and a shoulder fixed on the outer ring which help guide the shaft axially in a sense. A segment of arrest is inserted in the outer ring, the side opposite to the shoulder fixed, to avoid rolling to disassemble.
Roller-type NNC are equipped with an inner ring identical to that of NNCL and bearing NNCF. Their outer ring into two parts assembly is maintained by a restraint that should not be loaded axially. Its two parts are identical and it is equipped with a shoulder fixed which helps guide the shaft axially in both directions.
The bearings NNF series NNF 50 and 3194 (00) are still bearing joints on both sides and lined with grease. Their inner ring into two parts has three fixed shoulders and is maintained assembled by a segment of judgement. The outer ring has a central shoulder fixed. These bearings can be used to guide the shaft axially in both directions. The relatively large distance between two rows of roller bearings also allows couples to bear spill.

The outer ring of a rolling NNF, narrower than the inner ring of a millimeter, has two slots for segments of judgement on its outer surface. The spacers between the faces of the inner ring and neighbouring elements are superfluous and in blocks by example

Special Type NNB.These bearings have three fixed shoulders on the inner ring and an outer ring without broad-shouldered This special bearings are designed for mounting levels of requiring free movement axial important in the rotation.

The standard range of SKF cylindrical roller bearings joined by a row consists of bearings and NCF NJG.

On the side without shoulder of the outer ring, a segment of arrest keeps the various elements bearing assembly. Roller-type NJG belong to the wide range of sizes 23 and are intended to montages subjected to very high loads and turning at low speed. These bearings are equipped with two shoulders fixed on the outer ring and a shoulder fixed on the inner ring and can therefore withstand axial loads and guide the shaft axially in a sense. Unlike other types of bearings without cage, bearings type NJG are equipped with roller not separable. The outer ring, with both fixed and shoulders its roller, can be separated from the inner ring without the rollers are likely to fall for assembling and dismantling them are considerably easier.

When the leading Chinese wind turbine company Goldwind was awarded the contract to supply 33 turbines for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the company selected SKF as the bearing supplier for this prestigious project.

The 1.5 MW turbines are Goldwind’s largest turbines and, like all OEM’s, Goldwind knew that the larger the turbine the more they need to be sure about the reliability of critical components like bearings. That is because turbines producing higher energy outputs are usually physically bigger and taller than smaller energy-producing units. And that results in more wind being captured, which leads to higher forces on machinery at the top of the turbine where the electricity is generated,. In the case of Goldwind’s 1.5 MW turbines, that is 65 metres from the ground.

In choosing SKF, the Goldwind company based its decision on a good history of cooperation with SKF on smaller turbines, but also the fact that SKF had supplied bearings for many bigger turbines around the world, including the biggest in the world at that time; Repower’s 5 MW turbine that was designed for the extremely tough environment of offshore wind energy generation.

Mrs. Qiaozhen Ning, director of mechanical design at Goldwind, said “we are very happy to select SKF for this project because we know from experience that they understand the application demands of wind turbines, and the technical support we get from the engineers in SKF China is excellent.”

The 1.5 MW design is a direct drive turbine requiring no gearbox, but the turbine mainshaft — to which the blades and rotor are connected — must be supported by bearings to allow the blades and rotor to rotate in order to produce electricity.

The bearings selected for the 1.5 MW turbines are a single-row cylindrical bearing, almost 1 metre outside diameter, and a double-row tapered roller bearing, almost 600 mm outside diameter.

SKF calculations show that both bearings have sufficient capacity and design features to operate reliably in the expected range of weather conditions to be encountered during the Games but also for many years after the Games are finished, when the electricity generated will supply ‘green’ power to the city of Beijing. The turbines are all erected and many are already producing power.

Since the contract was awarded to Goldwind another 10 turbines have been ordered. The 43 turbines now constitute a wind farm on the banks of the Guanting reservoir in Beijing. These turbines are part of the increasing use of wind power in China and will probably be seen by millions around the world as television reports of the Olympic rowing event, that takes place on the Guanting reservoir, are broadcast in August 2008.

A retaining ring at the flangeless side of the outer ring holds the bearing assembly together. The axial internal clearance in the bearing is provided in the product table and is designed to permit small axial displacements of the shaft in relation to the housing,  as a result of thermal expansion of the shaft, to be accommodated in the bearing.

NJG design bearings comprise the heavy dimension series 23 and are intended for very heavily loaded, slow speed applications. These bearings have two integral flanges on the outer ring and one integral flange on the inner ring and can thus support axial loads acting in one direction and provide axial shaft location in one direction. In contrast to the other full complement bearing designs, NJG design bearings have a self-retaining roller complement. The outer ring with its two integral flanges together with the roller complement can therefore be withdrawn from the inner ring, without having to take any precautions to prevent the rollers from falling out .

NNCL design bearings  have an inner ring with three integral flanges and a flangeless outer ring. A retaining ring, inserted in the outer ring between the roller rows, keeps all bearing components together. Axial displacement of the shaft relative to the housing in both directions can be accommodated within the bearing. The bearings are therefore suitable for non-locating bearing positions.

NNCF design bearings  have three integral flanges on the inner ring and one integral flange on the outer ring enabling the bearing to provide axial location for a shaft in one direction. A retaining ring is inserted in the outer ring at the side opposite the integral flange and serves to hold the bearing together.

NNC design bearings  are equipped with the same inner ring as bearings of the NNCL and NNCF design. The outer ring is split and held together by retaining elements, which should not be loaded axially. Both parts of the outer ring are identical and carry one integral flange, enabling the bearing to locate the shaft axially in both directions.

NNF design bearings in the NNF 50 and 3194(00) series are always sealed on both sides and filled with grease. The two-piece inner ring has three integral flanges and is held together by a retaining ring. The outer ring has an integral central flange. The bearings can be used to locate a shaft axially in both directions. Because of the large distance between the two rows of rollers, the bearings are also able to accommodate tilting moments.

SKF comercial packaging.A box may seem a simple and logical way of packing products such as bearings, but when SKF bearings needed a new packaging design for its SKF Explorer spherical roller bearings, it decided to go back to basics. It assembled a project team to identify what the requirements were for the design of a new packaging solution that could be used to pack a large number of bearing sizes, that could be used for automated packing and facilitated handling, that was environmental responsible and protected the contents and those handling the boxes and that had labelling that supported SKF’s strong brand values.
Following a review of its packaging for larger bearings, SKF decided to embark upon the development of an improved design that would meet demands for robustness, safety and recycling and would reflect the high quality of the contents.

Both customers and SKF staff were involved in the consultation process and first evaluations of a new packaging solution, the SKF ProofBox, which took place in Sweden in mid 2000. The design team developed a set of broad criteria for the new packaging that covered safety, environment, product protection, handling, production and branding.


The project was a learning curve for all concerned, with testing and refinement until a packaging solution was arrived at that could meet SKF’s strict criteria. The result has been the successful introduction of the SKF Proof Box, which can be used to pack and ship 45 different bearing sizes on automated packing lines.


The design needed to take into account movement and storage, including the ability to transport the package using a forklift truck, to load it efficiently on a half pallet, and to stack packages both symmetrically and asymmetrically. It had to be possible for the bearing to be safely lifted out of the packaging by using, for example, a lifting strap.

The packaging needed to clearly show whether someone had opened it, and it had to be difficult to re-seal. The solution was a box divided horizontally into two halves in the middle. These halves overlap and the slit is sealed with tape. The tape cannot be removed without it being destroyed. To make it even more difficult for an unauthorized person to open the packaging, the product labels were placed across the tape. To make sure that the packaging could not be opened unintentionally, four straps were placed crosswise around the packaging.

With the new packaging it was envisaged that a packaging line with robots could be introduced. When samples became avail-able, it was possible to prepare production for the introduction of the new packaging.

Before the SKF ProofBox was launched, an intensive test programme was initiated:

Rust protection in climate chamber.
Transportation tests (truck, train, boat and aeroplane).
Loading tests.
ASTM handling tests by external packaging and transportation institute.

The success of the SKF ProofBox can be attributed to the fact that SKF set up a project group at an early stage and brought in expertise from different sectors, adding creativity to the process. SKF invested in tools to test whether the packaging idea functioned in reality. With the aid of the sample packaging, all the weaknesses could be traced and rectified before costly investments were made.

The SKF ProofBox is design protected in most industrial countries.
